A President for All Americans

Donald Trump supporters woke up Wednesday morning to find their efforts rewarded, their hopes for a Trump presidency realized. While just under half of America waited for Hillary Clinton to deliver her concession speech, Trump delivered some inspiring words with a central promise: “I will not let you down.”

President Elect Trump said early in his speech, that he had received a phone call from his opponent and that she congratulated- and he gestured to emphasize the point- ‘us.’ This suggests that she, and we would hope, the entire establishment she represents will respect the movement that pushed Donald Trump to victory.

Some of us took Hillary’s congratulating the entire Trump movement, and not just Trump, as an indication that existing powers will respect the referendum against establishment powers.

Just less than two days after the results came in and were confirmed, world leaders who had said very condescending and insulting things about Trump have backed down, and promised to work with him gracefully.

This could be a positive sign that the establishment might actually have some modicum of respect for the will of the people, or it could just be an artifact of their instinct to survive. Either way, this movement- oft referred to as the American Brexit- is not going away or slowing down, and it has never- not since 1776- been so gloriously empowered.

Trump appeared on stage before a reveling crowd with his youngest son, Barron, and his wife, Melania. Some enthusiastic supporters had some trouble keeping their signs down in front of the camera- but it just read as overwhelming exuberance. Trump’s first words were, “Thank you very much everybody.”

Trump’s first comments about his opponent were gracious in the extreme. He congratulated her on a hard fought race and for having been a very challenging opponent. He aroused the crowd’s gag reflex momentarily when he said, “We owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country.”

He made the point early on that we all have a responsibility to repair the damage that division has done to our society, a point that was directed toward republicans, democrats, voters, and citizens on both sides. He called for the reunification of the country into ‘one united people,’ which evoked a hearty cheer from the crowd.

“I pledge, to every citizen of our land,” he said, to the great pleasure of the audience- his right hand raised in his signature gesture, “to be president for all Americans…”

He extended his hand to those who stood against him, with sincerity to ask for guidance and help from critics and opponents; “…so that we can work together, and unify our great country.”

“Ours was not a campaign, but a great movement, made up of millions of hard working men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their families. It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds, and beliefs who want and expect our government to serve the people- and serve the people, it will. Working together, we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the American Dream.”

He spoke of his many years of experience in business, looking at untapped potential in people and projects all over the world. He expressed his desire to finally, after so many years of only seeing this potential, to use the powers of government, to finally help people fulfill their full potential.

It was a message that, to an audience and to a constituency that is so hungry for jobs- for the chance to feed their families, to prosper, and to realize new creative power, was very well received.

He spoke directly to the dedicated men and women raising families who have lost jobs, whose livelihoods have been disemboweled by liberal policies- and he promised them that the slow bleeding of the economy that’s been going on for decades now is going to come to a halt.

“We are going to fix our inner cities, and repair our bridges, highways, schools, and hospitals… We’re going to rebuild our infrastructure- which, by the way, will become second to none.”

As always, he spoke glowingly of the people he’s met on his journey to the White House. He expressed his love and admiration for ordinary people who are charged with a sense of duty for their communities, their families, and their country.

It was a glowing moment for Donald Trump and his supporters- a moment that, we hope, will represent the vivifying energy of the next four to eight years.
