The “Specifics” You Need

Today I would like to help answer one of the most common questions I receive on starting a business. The question of what type of business should I start? While there is no exact answer to this question there is one thing that will greatly increase your chances of success. That’s focusing on a specific niche.

Often times when people first think of starting a business they focus on creating something for a mass market. They want to be all things to all people. While this can work for some lucky few, like the Wal-Mart’s of the world, it’s not likely you’ll succeed this way.

The way my most successful students and I succeed is finding niches that are growing and profitable. Before I show you how to find a profitable one let me first explain what one is.

A niche is essentially a market or group of people with a specific want, need, or interest. This can be people with a hobby like golf or fishing. Or perhaps people with a specific issue like acne.

By focusing on a niche it allows you to better target potential customers to create products and marketing. The great thing about niches is they have specific ways they want to be marketed to and places where they can be reached. Often times a niche will have specific websites they visit or magazines they read. This makes ultra targeted marketing easy.

Just think about it. Let’s say you were selling golf clubs. Would you place your ad in Time or Golf Magazine? I think the answer is fairly obvious. There may be tons of golfers who read Time. Though I’d imagine there is large percentage of their readers who could care less about golf. Golf magazine is a completely different story. You know that 100% of their readership is interested in golf. If not why the heck are they even reading it?

It’s this type of focused advertising that when done right is virtually unstoppable. And now with paid search advertising you could reach any niche you could imagine quickly and cheaply. So how do you go about finding a profitable niche you can focus on? Well there are a few things that are very important to focus on.

1) Is the niche growing or at the very least remaining constant? Try to avoid passing trends that will fall out of favor in a few years. While it is possible to make a quick buck this way it will not create a sustainable business for you.

2) Do the people in the niche spend money? I know what you’re probably thinking, everybody spends money it’s a part of everyday life. While that may be true, there are many niches where people spend little to no money in their niche. Maybe it’s a hobby that requires very little money. Like a group of people who have an interest in a free online game.

3) Are there other people selling to that niche? Believe it or not the answer you want is yes. This can confuse people that tend to think of competition as a bad thing. While in fact when there are other people selling to that niche it proves that it is viable. I also like it because then there is a built in network of potential partners to work with.

One niche that I’ve discovered fits all three of these criteria. Is the biz-opp or make money from home niche. With more and more people looking for work or trying to supplement their income this is a massive industry.  Most ‘gurus’ in this field would tell you this market is too competitive and you should find another niche.  I’m calling BS.

I’ve made money from this niche and I know you can too.  One of the best things about biz-opp is it lends itself to the highly profitable information marketing.  Since there is the potential to make money with the information sold it has a higher value.

The best part is there a numerous affiliate programs in this niche so you don’t even need to create your own products or sales letters.  There is a great opportunity for you to build a very profitable business. Now you know the specific and focused type of market you need to greatly increase your chance of success.

Until Next Time…
