Riots And Protests Sweep Across Asia And The Middle East As Food Prices Soar

Sri Lanka is in the midst of protests because of the skyrocketing food prices and it has got a whole lot worse, as protestors are now clashing with law enforcement.

The homes of 38 politicians have been burned to the ground and Sir Lanka Police said that on May 10, 75 other houses were also burned down by protestors.

There have been at least nine deaths since the violence erupted and 200 people have been injured, as the country falls into one of the worst economic crises since 1948.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense has ordered soldiers to shoot anyone assaulting state officials or damaging state property. Armed forces were also ordered to disperse the demonstrators, using water cannons and tear gas.

The soldiers were deployed after the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa’s home, was the target of protestors who attempted to get into his property twice. They failed to get into his residence but burned down his ancestral home.

Rajapaksa has since resigned and used armed forces to evacuate himself and his immediate family. He resigned when television footage showed his supporters beating protestors with sticks and setting their tents on fire.

Natural News reported:

Home to 22 million people, the South Asian Island has been experiencing rising food prices alongside widespread electricity shortages. Since March, thousands of Sri Lankans have taken to the streets and called for the resignation of Rajapaksa due to his mishandling of the economic crisis. This vitriol has extended to the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, brother of the former prime minister, who has not shown any hint of stepping down.

Iran is also experiencing its share of civil unrest after the government cut food subsidies, which cut the prices for different staples like cooking oil, chicken and eggs. Of course, when everyone found out that the subsidies were about to be cut – panic shopping kicked in and now shelves in stores are empty.

Those unable to get food took to the streets to voice out their displeasure.

The demonstrators directed their anger toward Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi who were both elected in 2021. Raisi has already promised to rescue the economy, but the public are not happy with his performance and some protests include chants wanting the president dead.

Some protestors have even set fire to a military base which is owned by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Basij division.

Tehran has promised to give $14 per month to every Iranian citizen to help them battle price hikes – but as we all know, these sorts of schemes never work out how they’re intended.

Foreign Desk Editor-In-Chief Lisa Daftari said of the protests in Iran: “Every so often, we see these types of protests in Iran. Each time, it is under a different premise – the price of eggs, the price of gas, the price of bread. But the underlying message, supported by the slogans heard throughout the demonstrations, is the same: They are protesting the entirety of a brutal regime.

She added that the protests are no longer limited to the capital Tehran and other urban areas. “We are seeing protests throughout the country in urban and rural areas and throughout the very vast and diverse Iranian population.”

  1. One person responsible for no/high cost of meat, no formula for babies, no vegetable farms and destroying food processing plants is Guess Who? Look at the track record for Mr Wm Gates ..

    1. Gates bought 200,000 acres of farm land. And also started producing artificial formula. Over 20 food processing plants burned down in weeks. Problems importing fertilizer. Problems rail shipping fertilizer quantities.
      Coincidence? I don’t think so!
I suggest stocking up essentials ASAP.

    2. Got that right!! Bill Gates is at the center of DEPOPULATION by any means necessary! Virus, vaccine, STARVATION, war, chaos!!

  2. when the population has outstripped the supply of food, people become desperate. desperation begets violence more than we should like. our food processing plants in the US are being targeted by unknown miscreants. don’t think food shortages cannot happen here.
